2 1/4 ASSEMBLIES

“These were works made from a number of frames and collaged together. Many of these pictures were, at least in terms of subject matter, a parody of snapshots . . . While snapshots tend to inherently give great importance to subject matter, I felt that the emphasis on frame-to-frame relations in these pictures helped to diminish the pictures’ relation to the external world. The black line which surrounded the frames, traditionally a sign of veracity in representing an uncropped image, in this case becomes a sign of construction, emphasizing that the pictures were a fabrication, setting up a play between the representational and non-representational elements in the image . . . It is also important to me that what is produced is a structure, a shape as well as a space or a narrative . . . and developing/creating/ utilizing a dynamic of difference and repetition [over time], as a new form of picturing and thinking.

In addition to the subject matter, there is an emphasis on the making of the pictures. This fact is [sometimes] emphasized by the appearance of the photographer. Rather than emphasize something like symbol, metaphor, or representation, this emphasizes the process of the production of the image and of its reception.”
